Are my TEC devices spying on me?

By Care2Communities | February 1, 2023 | Technology

In this day and age, we rely on technology a lot. While technology brings ease and convenience to many aspects of life, the use of technology doesn’t always have a stellar reputation in terms of security. We’ve all heard the stories of technology being inappropriately used to spy on people.

But at the same time, when used correctly, technology has become a necessary and appreciated factor in our modern world. We’re surrounded by technology that captures metrics all the time: smart fridges, smart homes, health wristbands, even automatic doors at the supermarket and car alarms.

As a provider of home care in Rushcliffe that uses Technology Enabled Care, we understand that the idea of having technology monitoring your home may be off-putting – especially for older generations who perhaps didn’t grow up with such technology as an active component of everyday life.

In this blog post, we share more information on how we incorporate technology into the care we provide to offer the best support possible. Read on to find out more.

What is Technology Enabled Care?

Technology Enabled Care is the future of homecare. Advances in technology have made it possible to proactively monitor a person’s health and wellbeing without intruding upon their private life. It’s thanks to Technology Enabled Care that we’re able to provide faster responses in emergency situations, provide peace of mind to families, reduce digital exclusion, improve mental health and help prevent injury or illness.

How does Technology Enabled Care work?

The Technology Enabled Care we provide can be viewed the same way one might think about the technology used to recommend films on a streaming platform. We’ll start by installing a small sensor in the kitchen which we call our Tec2Care device. This amazing device can build up a picture of your loved one’s behaviour, and gets smarter over time by gradually learning their habits and understanding their typical routine. For example, it might notice that they typically put on the kettle at 9 am or that dinner is usually cooked between 5 pm and 6 pm. If the device detects anything out of the ordinary that doesn’t match their usual routine, a Wellbeing Assistant or family member will be alerted.

So, is Technology Enabled Care spying on me?

You can rest assured that no one is spying on you. Absolutely no data is being captured without your consent and you are not being filmed or listened to. Rather, the device automatically tracks information such as temperature and humidity to help us identify potential issues such as a pot being left on the stove, fuel poverty, or if a person may need extra help. The information can also be used to identify homes that could potentially develop mould or damp issues.

In every case, you have full control over who is alerted and who the data is shared with. In addition, the device is fully GDPR compliant and operates on a low-powered wide area network (WAN) so that no Wi-Fi connection is required to power it.

We are here for you 24/7

While Tec2Care can be used as a standalone 24/7 monitoring solution to provide peace of mind, we can also use it in combination with check-in calls and social support. Our packages are flexible and can be adapted according to your family’s care needs. That’s the power of holistic home care.
