How homecare can support mental health

By Care2Communities | September 28, 2022 | Wellbeing

Looking after your mental health is important, no matter your age. Yet when you think of the issues that ageing adults face, a decline in physical health tends to come to mind.

Here at Care2Communities, we understand the negative effects poor mental health can have on a person’s overall quality of life. That’s why we take a holistic approach to care, encouraging all aspects of each person’s wellbeing. Read on to learn more about how our fresh approach to home care in Rushcliffe can support mental health and help you or a loved one to feel happier and healthier at home.

The importance of mental health

Statistics show that approximately one in 4 older people live with common mental health conditions. And yet, a decline in mental health is not an inevitable part of growing older.

We believe that it’s equally important to look after your mental health as it is your physical health. Unfortunately, however, older people have less access to services and support compared to other age groups. In addition, there is still a negative stigma around talking about mental health, especially for older males.

The most common mental health condition amongst older people is depression, followed by anxiety. Loneliness also has a significant impact on mental health, including increasing the risk of depression and dementia. It’s natural that as people get older, social circles may shrink or physical and financial limitations may interfere with doing the things that once brought you joy. Even digital exclusion can contribute to increased isolation. All these factors can lead to less social interaction, less time spent in the community, less opportunity to connect with others and less time pursuing activities that give life meaning and bring you pleasure.

Putting your wellbeing first

A key element of the innovative care we provide is encouraging all aspects of wellbeing. We do this by fostering connections, encouraging others to nurture their relationships with family, friends and their community. By working alongside local people, communities and services, we strive to reduce loneliness by connecting people through shared interests. Our Wellbeing Assistants also promote self-care and empower those we support to be as independent as possible.

In addition, the Tech Enabled Care we provide is designed to promote wellbeing and give peace of mind to family members when they can’t be there. It is through our innovative use of assistive technology that we’re able to reduce digital exclusion, encourage connection and keep loneliness at bay.

All of the care we provide is rooted in the idea of Five Ways of Wellbeing, an evidence-based model to improve personal wellness.

Our supportive subscription packages

We provide flexible support that is responsive to changing needs and gives those we look after as much choice, control and independence as possible.

Each of our subscription packages include a combination of Tech Enabled Care, a certain number of wellbeing calls per week, and face-to-face support per month. The number of hours in each package can be used flexibly throughout the month and the days and times that support is delivered can be changed week to week so that we’re here for you when you need us most.
